Can you mine XRP?
No — XRP cannot be mined. Unlike Bitcoin or other proof-of-work coins, the XRP Ledger (XRPL) does not use mining at all. It reaches consensus through the Ripple Protocol Consensus Algorithm (RPCA), where a network of independent validators agrees on the order and validity of transactions without competing to solve computational puzzles.
Why there is no XRP mining
The entire supply of XRP — 100 billion coins — was created in a single genesis event when the XRP Ledger launched in 2012. No new XRP has been or ever will be created afterward; the protocol only removes a small amount of XRP as a transaction fee with every transaction (a deflationary burn), it does not mint new coins. Since there is no block reward to earn, there is nothing for a miner to be paid for.
What validators do instead
The XRPL is secured by a network of validators (anyone can run one), but running a validator does not pay out XRP the way mining pays out Bitcoin. Validators help decentralize and secure the network and build reputation, not earn block rewards.
How to actually get XRP
Since mining is not an option, the practical way to obtain XRP is to buy it on a cryptocurrency exchange. See the exchange and wallet options in the sidebar for ways to buy and securely store XRP.
Curious about other coins that cannot be mined either? See our guide on TRON (TRX) mining — TRX also relies on validators instead of miners.
