Lisk is a blockchain platform that focuses on innovating the area of decentralized blockchain applications, also known as DApps, and letting developers to build, publish and distribute these applications. The platform runs on JavaScript and the apps themselves are created on a sidechain which is separated from the main blockchain. Running applications on a sidechain prevents impacting the performance, security and stability of the main blockchain. Lisk tokens can be sent between participants like digital currency just like on other cryptocurrency platforms. Developers can use Lisk tokens for their sidechains or create their own unique tokens which allow them to monetize their applications.

Lisk uses the blockchain technology the same as Ethereum but what makes it different from the others is the technology of a sidechain. A sidechain can be used for decentralized storage services or blog networks, identity verification services or a sidechain with anonymous transactions. The method of validating transactions within Lisk and creating blocks is executed using a consensus algorithm called Delegated Proof of Stake. Lisk holders vote on a selection of 101 delegates who create new blocks in the blockchain and collect block rewards. Each round of consensus consists of 101 blocks with each delegate assigned one block forge. If a delegate is unable to forge their assigned block, the activity in that block is moved to the next block.
