Solana is a high-throughput layer-1 blockchain launched in 2020 by Anatoly Yakovenko, Greg Fitzgerald and the Solana Labs team. It combines Proof of History, a verifiable clock that timestamps transactions before consensus, with Proof of Stake validation to process thousands of transactions per second at a fraction of a cent in fees. Solana hosts a large ecosystem of DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces and decentralized exchanges, and SOL is used to pay network fees, stake with validators and take part in on-chain governance.
